Spring has officially arrived, but with blooming flowers and budding trees comes stuffy noses and watery eyes. At Maki Heating and Air, we want to give you three tips to help keep your home allergen-free, so that you and your family can enjoy a comfortable spring season without having to worry about how close the nearest tissue box is!
1. Clean or Replace Your Air Filters
While replacing your air filters is recommended every three months or so, changing them at the beginning of spring is especially important. By replacing all of the filters in your heating and air conditioning unit (or cleaning reusable ones) at the beginning of springtime, you ensure that you have new, clean, highly efficient air filters to eliminate pollen, mold, dust, dirt, and pet dander from circulating in the air throughout your home.
High Pollen Doesn’t Have to Be a Problem
In the months when trees, grasses, and flowers are releasing high quantities of pollen, it is essential for your health to try to maintain the cleanest air possible inside your home. While you might not be able to control the green layer of pollen covering your car every morning in March, April, and May, you can control how much of it is allowed to enter your house!Â
If your heating and air system works with reusable filters, they are typically easy to clean, and there is no need to get entirely new ones. However, if your system is one of the majority of HVAC units that uses disposable filters, it is necessary to actually replace them. If you are unsure of what type of filtration system your unit uses, simply give us a call at Maki Heating and Air and we can help!Â
2. Invest in An Air Purifier
With warm weather seemingly coming earlier every year and dryer conditions causing more dust to be carried on the wind, investing in a home air purification unit is a smart idea. When looking for a home filtration system, you want to search for an air purifier that has a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating of at least 11, which means it is able to capture very small particles to truly purify the air in your home.Â
Things like pet dander, mold spores, and pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds, can be captured within a MERV 11 (or higher rated) filtration system so that it doesn’t linger in your home and causes allergies to act up.Â
Find the Right Air Purifier for You
One of our favorite air purifiers is the Coway Airmega 300. It has a colored light system that changes color depending upon the amount of contamination in the air. Once the purifier has been turned on, and has cleaned all of the air in the room, it changes colors to let you know the air has been purified.Â
This particular model can filter an area of approximately 1256 square feet, so if you have a two-story house, it would be worth investing in two separate units. The same goes if you have a very large house or an attached mother-in-law quarters, attic, workshop, or basement where people spend a lot of time.Â
If you live in a smaller space like a studio apartment, there are also less expensive units that are highly effective at filtering air in smaller spaces.Â
3. Schedule an HVAC system deep cleaning:Â
As spring arrives it brings not only allergens, but also warmer weather. Because of this, spring is the perfect time to have the professionals at Maki Electric, Heating and Air come out to your home or office to give your HVAC system a deep cleaning and thorough inspection.Â
When we provide a deep cleaning of a heating and air-conditioning unit, we clean the duct system, the filters, the vents that blow air into your home, and even clean the coils removing things like dirt, hair, dust, and lint. While this may seem like overkill, a clean system is an efficient one, which means that your air conditioner and heater have to work harder when they are dirty, and this essentially causes you to spend more money on your energy bill.
Cleaning Your Ducts and Coils Saves You Money
Keeping ducts and coils clean ensures your unit is running at peak efficiency, which allows your system to use less energy, and therefore helps the planet and saves you money at the same time. When you schedule a thorough inspection and cleaning, we will also check for any problems to make sure your heater and air conditioner are in perfect working order as the temperature fluctuates between cool nights and warmer days. That way, you will be ahead of the curve and 100% prepared for the beginning of air conditioner season… which is just around the corner!
