Preparing Your Air Conditioner For Summer

I’m sure you’ve noticed the recent spike in temperature around the area. With days quickly creeping up towards the high 80s into the 90s, most of us will be reaching for the thermostat. When you go to turn your AC on, you want to make sure it works and is ready to perform. If you’ve had a Maki AC Tune Up, you’ve already off to a great start. To help homeowners prepare, we’ve put together a list of things to do before the summer heat really picks up. Follow along and see if you’ve done all these!

Remove Condenser Covers

When winter hits the foothills, many homeowners help protect their AC by covering the condenser. If you use a condenser cover, remove it and clear away debris. These covers keep the condenser protected from weather, but make a great home for pests during the winter. The type of cover your condenser uses may vary, but leaving it on while running the AC can heavily damage the system. If you don’t know how to remove the condenser cover, we can help with that.

Clean Areas Around Condensers

During gusty fall and winter days, debris is tossed around and deposited. Often times, debris is built up around your condenser and needs to be cleared. While clearing away debris, this is a good time to take a look at your unit. Look around the condenser and see if there has been any visible damage. Remember, these are finely tuned pieces of equipment. If you see potential damage, don’t try to make any repairs or adjustments yourself. Get a certified Maki technician to look at it for you.

Change AC Filters

This may seem like common sense, but many homeowners neglect to regularly change the air filters in their HVAC system. Depending on your location, and the conditions within the home, your air filter may need to be changed as often as every 30 days. When filters get clogged the refreshing, cool air can’t reach you. This restricted air flow can make your air conditioner work harder and put more wear on the system. Change air filters regularly to not only ensure better air quality within the home, but to keep your home cooler overall.

Check Ductwork

Ducting is responsible for transporting that cool air across the home and circulating the warm air back through the registers. If this ducting is blocked or closed off, it cannot perform this essential function. Go around your home and check the duct vents to ensure they are open and clear of obstruction. Also check air registers to make sure they aren’t being covered by a rug or furniture. This can greatly impede the circulation of air, leaving a house warm and smelling stale.
